University of Ibadan joins ASUU’s two-week warning strike

The University of Ibadan chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Monday joined the union’s nationwide warning strike, effectively suspending all academic and administrative activities on campus.

Checks by PUNCH correspondents revealed that lecture halls and offices were locked, while student and vehicular movement within the university significantly reduced as the strike took full effect.

Most students, who had been informed of the planned action, stayed indoors as the university settled into the shutdown.

Confirming the situation, the chairman of the UI ASUU chapter, Dr. Adefemi Afolabi, said the strike commenced at midnight on Sunday and would continue until further directives are received from the union’s national secretariat.

There is full compliance with the directive from our national body.

“The warning strike commenced at midnight on Sunday and will continue until we receive further instructions from the union,” Afolabi told a vanguard correspondent.

He added that the chapter’s monitoring team had been deployed across faculties and departments to ensure full compliance with the strike directive, emphasizing that “no academic or related activity is currently taking place on campus.”

It would be recalled that ASUU declared a two-week warning strike on Sunday over the FG’s failure to meet its demands.

The announcement was made by the National President of the Union, Prof. Chris Piwuna, at a press briefing in Abuja on Sunday at the University of Abuja.
