The United States Embassy in Nigeria has issued a security alert warning of a potential terrorist threat targeting American government facilities and U.S.-affiliated schools in the country.
In the alert released late Monday, the embassy advised American citizens in Nigeria to exercise heightened caution, particularly when visiting U.S. government locations and institutions linked to the United States.
According to the notice, the warning applies specifically to the U.S. Embassy in Abuja and the U.S. Consulate General in Lagos, as well as schools and organizations associated with the United States.
The embassy did not disclose specific details about the nature of the threat but emphasized the importance of increased vigilance by American citizens and personnel in the country.
“The U.S. Embassy is aware of potential security threats directed at U.S. government facilities in Nigeria,” the notice stated, urging citizens to remain alert and follow all security guidance issued by local authorities.
The advisory also encouraged U.S. nationals to monitor local news, avoid large gatherings where possible, and maintain awareness of their surroundings while traveling within Nigeria.
The embassy further advised Americans to limit non-essential visits to the embassy compound in Abuja and the consulate facility in Lagos until further notice.
The warning comes amid heightened geopolitical tensions following coordinated military strikes by the United States and Israel against Iran, an event that has raised security concerns across several regions.
Security analysts have noted that such developments can sometimes trigger demonstrations or retaliatory threats against Western interests globally.
In Nigeria, authorities have reportedly increased security presence in Abuja following threats of protests believed to be linked to pro-Iranian groups.
In parts of northern Nigeria, where a significant Shi’ite Muslim minority exists and where some groups have expressed support for Iran, thousands of demonstrators have taken to the streets in recent days.
While the protests have largely remained peaceful, security agencies are closely monitoring developments to prevent any escalation that could threaten diplomatic facilities or foreign nationals.
Nigeria hosts several diplomatic missions and international organizations, making security coordination between local authorities and foreign embassies a critical component of national security.
The U.S. Embassy reiterated that the safety of American citizens remains a priority and encouraged individuals to remain informed through official embassy communication channels.
American citizens in Nigeria were also advised to register with the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive real-time security updates and emergency alerts from the embassy.
As of the time of the advisory, Nigerian authorities had not reported any confirmed attack related to the warning but maintained that security agencies remain vigilant.
The embassy said it would continue to monitor the situation and provide updates if new information emerges.
