Two Arrested Over Killing of NYSC Member in Benue Mob Attack

The Police Command in Benue State has confirmed the arrest of two suspects in connection with the killing of a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Mr Benjamin Msughaondo.

The Command’s spokesperson, DSP Edet Udeme, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Makurdi.

According to her, the incident occurred around midnight on Sunday at Major settlement near the Buruku Local Government Secretariat.

She said the victim was allegedly accused by a group of hoodlums of stealing a motorcycle and was attacked by a mob without any form of investigation.

Preliminary police findings, however, showed that the accusation was false. Udeme explained that documents linked to the motorcycle indicated that the deceased was the rightful owner.

“He was wrongly accused of stealing a motorcycle, and without verifying the claim, he was mobbed to death,” she said.

The police spokesperson confirmed that two suspects have been arrested in connection with the killing, while another suspect is still at large.

She added that efforts are ongoing to apprehend fleeing suspects and assured that a thorough investigation would be conducted to ensure all those involved are brought to justice.

The incident has again raised concerns over the dangers of mob justice and the need for proper verification before taking action against suspected offenders.
