Former senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, has said indications suggest a gradual softening of the United States’ previously hard stance toward Nigeria, following recent high-level diplomatic engagements. He made the remark in a post on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account.
Sani’s comment came after Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, was invited by U.S. President Donald Trump to attend the 74th Annual National Prayer Breakfast at Capitol Hill. The event is a prominent gathering that brings together political leaders, diplomats, and faith figures from around the world.
Speaking at the breakfast, President Trump publicly acknowledged Mrs Tinubu, describing her as “a very respected woman,” and noting her role as a Christian pastor in one of Nigeria’s largest churches. The recognition drew attention both in diplomatic and political circles back home.
Reacting to the development, Sani said the public recognition of the First Lady by President Trump reflects improving relations, adding that “a hardened stance on the country is now softening, courtesy of adept diplomatic engagement,” and expressing hope for more positive outcomes ahead.
