What started as a simple joke among friends has ended in tragedy as a young man identified as Gbenga lost his life after attempting to lift four bags of cement in a bet.
The incident occurred last Saturday when Gbenga and his friends challenged each other to carry multiple bags of cement. The prize for the dare was their mobile phones. With each bag weighing 50kg, the total load amounted to 200kg, nearly three times the weight of an average man.
Driven by energy and ego, Gbenga stepped forward to take on the challenge. In a viral video, he managed to lift the bags but immediately collapsed, with his body unable to withstand the strain. His spine and nerves reportedly gave way, leaving him unable to move or speak clearly.
Too late to go back
Efforts by his friends to revive him, including pouring water on his body and attempting to pull him up, proved futile. By Wednesday, Gbenga had passed away, leaving his family, friends, and community in mourning.
The tragic incident has sparked conversations about the dangers of reckless dares and the need for young people to prioritise their health and future over fleeting moments of clout.
