Award-winning singer Tiwa Savage has made a surprising revelation about one of her most iconic collaborations, Dorobucci.
The singer admitted she initially thought the song was “crap” when she first heard it, unaware she would later feature on the hit.
During an interview on NotJustOk, the Afrobeats queen recounted that producer Don Jazzy kept playing the track repeatedly while they were in Dubai for her wedding.
Tiwa said she tried to hide her true feelings about the song at the time, never imagining it would go on to become one of Mavin Records’ biggest anthems.
The Dubai moment that changed everything
According to Tiwa, Don Jazzy’s obsession with the beat started long before the group recorded it. She revealed that the producer played it “over and over again” throughout their hotel stay in Dubai.
After the wedding, Don Jazzy urged her to return to Nigeria to record a verse on the project. Tiwa, thinking she was heading for her honeymoon, reluctantly agreed.
When she eventually heard the final version in the studio, she said she was stunned, describing the transformation of the song as “flabbergasting.”
From doubt to a classic collaboration
Tiwa also confessed that she was the last artist to record her verse because she wasn’t convinced about the song’s potential. She even compared the experience to her earlier uncertainty about Eminado, another massive hit she had doubted.
Despite her hesitation, Dorobucci became an instant success, topping charts and defining an era of Mavin’s dominance in Afrobeats.
She praised Don Jazzy’s creative instinct, admitting that he had once again proved her wrong with his unmatched production genius.
Reflecting on her journey with Mavin Records, Tiwa said the experience taught her the importance of trusting creative processes.
She acknowledged Don Jazzy’s unique ear for hits and expressed gratitude for being part of a song that still resonates years later.
Tiwa concluded with a heartfelt “shout out” to Don Jazzy, calling Dorobucci a “phenomenal” record that redefined her respect for collaboration and teamwork in music.
