Tiv Day: ‘We must preserve our traditions, values, history for future generations’ – Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu has extended solidarity to the Tiv people of Benue State as they marked the annual Tiv Day Celebration, reaffirming the Federal Government’s resolve to promote national cohesion, inclusivity, and the protection of Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage.

This year’s celebration is themed “The Rebirth of the Tiv Nation.”

Speaking through the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, President Tinubu described culture as a powerful element that shapes identity and strengthens the sense of belonging among any people.

According to him, cultural heritage serves as the thread that unites communities, safeguarding their traditions, values, and history for generations yet unborn.

The President praised the Tiv people for their immense contributions to Nigeria’s growth and development, as well as their bravery during the civil war in standing firm for the unity of the country.

He also joined the Tor Tiv, His Royal Majesty, Professor James Ayatse, the Tiv Area Traditional Council, and Tiv sons and daughters across the globe in prayers for a peaceful and successful celebration. He further prayed for longevity, sound health, and divine wisdom for the Tor Tiv as he continues to provide leadership for his people.

Restating the focus of his administration, the President said the Renewed Hope Agenda is centred on economic reforms, infrastructure expansion, social advancement, food sufficiency, employment generation, and transparent governance.

He explained that ongoing reforms and development programmes across critical sectors are designed to reposition Nigeria on a path of fairness, stability, and sustainable progress.

President Tinubu also called on Tiv and Benue political leaders to embrace unity and collaboration in the interest of peace and development across Tiv land and Benue State as a whole.

In his remarks, the Tor Tiv, Orchivirigh Professor James Ayatse, thanked God for divine protection and grace to witness the celebration and expressed appreciation to President Tinubu for delegating the SGF to represent him.

He said, “We still recall your visit after the killings in the state recently and the positive steps you have taken to improve security in Benue.”

The Tor Tiv also commended Governor Hyacinth Alia for providing the financial and moral backing that made the celebration possible, noting that the event had been postponed for several years due to insecurity.

He said, “As we rejoice during this occasion, let us heal ourselves from the social and political wounds we inflicted on ourselves consciously and unconsciously.”

Expressing optimism, the Tor Tiv voiced confidence in President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), saying it holds promise for ending persistent attacks and restoring peace, particularly in Benue State.
