Tinubu reappoints Buba Marwa as NDLEA chairman for new five-year term

President Bola Tinubu has approved the reappointment of Brigadier-General Mohammed Buba Marwa (retd.) as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, extending his tenure until 2031.

Tinubu extends Marwa’s NDLEA tenure to 2031

The decision was announced on Friday in a statement issued by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

Marwa, who first assumed office in January 2021 under former President Muhammadu Buhari, has overseen large-scale drug seizures, high-profile arrests and expanded anti-drug campaigns across the country.

Your reappointment is a vote of confidence in your onerous efforts to rid our country of the menace of drug trafficking and drug abuse,” President Tinubu said in the statement.

“I urge you not to relent in tracking the merchants of hard drugs, out to destroy our people, especially the young ones,” the President added, urging Marwa to sustain and intensify enforcement operations.

The President believes Marwa has demonstrated discipline, competence and measurable results, and this extension will help the NDLEA build on its momentum,” he noted.

Major drug seizures recorded under Marwa

Under Marwa’s leadership, the NDLEA has recorded over 73,000 arrests of drug mules and barons, seized more than 15 million kilogrammes of illicit substances and expanded nationwide drug abuse prevention initiatives targeting young people.

This continuity is strategic. Marwa has set a strong operational standard, and the fight against narcotics demands consistency,” he said.

Before joining the NDLEA, Marwa chaired the Presidential Advisory Committee for the Elimination of Drug Abuse from 2018 to 2020.

He previously served as military governor of Lagos and Borno states and held senior military positions, including Brigade Major of the 23 Armoured Brigade, Aide-de-Camp to then Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant-General Theophilus Danjuma, and later as Defence Adviser at Nigeria’s Mission to the United Nations.

He also holds postgraduate degrees from the University of Pittsburgh and Harvard University.

With the renewed five-year term, Marwa is expected to deepen reforms within the NDLEA and drive nationwide efforts aimed at curbing drug trafficking and abuse.
