President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Nigerians Farouk Gumel and Tobi Amusan for their recent international achievements, describing their successes as a source of national pride.
In a statement on Tuesday, issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President highlighted Gumel’s appointment as Chairman of the Botswana Sovereign Wealth Fund Limited. Tinubu said the appointment reflects Gumel’s competence and underscores the global recognition of Nigerian professionals.
“His leadership in this significant role brings immense pride to our nation, and I am confident he will excel and further cement Nigeria’s reputation for excellence in global finance,” the President stated.
Gumel currently serves as Vice Chairman for Africa at the Tropical General Investment Group, a conglomerate with interests in agribusiness, finance, and manufacturing. He has been instrumental in advancing Nigeria’s food sufficiency initiatives and promoting regional economic cooperation. Gumel is also a former Senior Partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), where he provided strategic advisory services across Africa.
President Tinubu also praised Tobi Amusan, who won a silver medal in the women’s 100m hurdles at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan. The President lauded her “relentless drive, resilience, and unwavering spirit,” noting that her performance exemplifies the heights Nigerians can achieve through dedication and hard work.
“Tobi has once again demonstrated that with patriotic fervour, coupled with hard work and determination, any height is surmountable. Her achievement is a source of national pride,” Tinubu said.
Amusan, who made history in 2022 as the first Nigerian to win a gold medal at the World Athletics Championships, is the current world record holder in the 100m hurdles with a time of 12.12 seconds. She has also claimed gold at the African Championships, Commonwealth Games, and Diamond League, cementing her status as a leading figure in global track and field.
The President wished both Gumel and Amusan continued success in their respective fields and reaffirmed the government’s support for their endeavors.
