Tinted glass permit: Police await Court directive

The Nigeria Police Force has clarified that it has not been officially served with a Federal High Court order cited by human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong regarding the enforcement of tinted glass permits. The statement was made by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, who emphasized that the police are yet to act on the order and urged the public to consider the full context of the ruling.

Hundeyin highlighted point 8 of the court order, which refused certain reliefs sought by tinted glass car owners through their counsel, John Aikpokpo-Martins. The reliefs included restraining the police from enforcing the new tinted glass permit policy, from harassing motorists, and from collecting fees via the Parkway Projects account pending the determination of the motion on notice.

The Federal High Court in Warri had directed the police to maintain the status quo and respect ongoing judicial proceedings. Leading counsel, Kunle Edun, SAN, described the order as “a major step in upholding the rule of law and protecting the rights of citizens while the substantive issues are yet to be decided.”
