Nigerian entertainer, Speed Darlington has sparked controversy after making derogatory remarks about Igbo women in a video shared online.
The singer advised men against marrying Igbo women, claiming they have “no value” and questioning what they offer that women from other ethnic groups do not.
Speed Darlington said, “The worst thing you can do as a man is to end up with an Igbo girl/woman. Igbo girls have no value. What does Igbo women have that other girls don’t have?”
The entertainer further argued that marrying an Igbo woman could affect a man’s progress in life, while making additional comments about their character and questioning why they were perceived as proud.
Speed Darlington links remarks to wider issues
Speed Darlington also brought Nigeria’s political history into his argument, referencing the absence of an Igbo president while making his claims about Igbo women.
His comments have since drawn attention online, with social media users debating the remarks and questioning the basis for making broad claims about women from an entire ethnic group.
Some commenters appeared to agree with the entertainer, while others criticised him for making what they described as sweeping generalisations.
Nigerians react to Speed Darlington’s comments
Several social media users challenged Speed Darlington to provide evidence for his claims, while others argued that personal opinions should not be used to stereotype an entire ethnic group.
The controversy has consequently renewed online discussions around relationships, ethnic stereotypes and the tendency to generalise about communities based on individual experiences or opinions.
