Former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has criticized the newly appointed Inspector General of Police, Tunji Disu, following an incident in which businesswoman Tracy Ohiri reportedly collapsed in court and was rushed to the hospital.
Sowore’s reaction was contained in a video shared on his verified Facebook account, where he expressed concern over the handling of Ohiri’s case. He alleged that the new IGP, widely regarded by some as competent, allowed developments within his first 48 hours in office to damage public confidence in the police leadership.
In the video, Sowore accused Akin Fakorede, the Commissioner of Police in charge of the IGP Monitoring Unit, of attempting to block Ohiri’s bail and obstruct justice. He suggested that such actions reflected poorly on the office of the Inspector General and raised questions about the direction of the police under the new leadership.
“The new IGP who everybody thinks has sense, look at what you are doing, you allowed Fakorede to mess up your first 48 hours in office,” Sowore said.
The controversy stems from an ongoing debt dispute between Ohiri and the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi. Ohiri was arrested and arraigned in court after alleging that Umahi owed her N250 million for promotional materials she claimed to have supplied during his 2014 governorship campaign.
The incident has generated widespread reactions on social media, with concerns raised about due process and the conduct of law enforcement authorities. As of the time of this report, the Nigeria Police Force has not issued an official statement addressing Sowore’s allegations or the circumstances surrounding Ohiri’s collapse in court.See_More…
