During a national television interview on Monday, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, expressed doubt about the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) readiness for the forthcoming governorship elections in Osun and Ekiti States.
These remarks have since sparked tension within the Osun State chapter of the PDP, as members interpret his comments as a warning about internal instability threatening the party’s future.
His position has also deepened concerns over the lingering leadership crisis within the party, with fears that unresolved divisions could weaken its performance in next year’s polls.
Wike cautions Adeleke over looming crisis
Wike revealed that Governor Adeleke had personally visited him to discuss the situation, during which he warned the governor of the “danger” facing his political future.
He said, “Ask the governor of Osun, Adeleke. He came to see me, and I told him, ‘You are in danger.’ I don’t like people who are not truthful. Ask the dancing governor if I never called him to say, do you see the implication, do you see the danger you are running into?’”
The minister criticised what he described as a spirit of overconfidence among governors, suggesting that some believe they can “do it all” without addressing the deeper cracks within the party’s structure.
Osun PDP leaders react to growing tension
The comments have reportedly caused unease within Osun PDP, with party loyalists expressing concern about the impact on Adeleke’s re-election prospects.
A party chieftain, Adewale Adegbite, said Wike’s remarks had unsettled members.
“You can listen to what Wike said. Are we not done for as a party in 2026? Our members are united, but this development could affect our preparation,” Adegbite noted.
However, the Osun PDP Director of Media, Oladele Olabamji, dismissed fears of a looming crisis.
He maintained that the governor’s nomination process remained intact, saying, “We don’t foresee any danger. Governor Adeleke’s nomination process has begun, and it will be completed without any issue.”
