Tax Laws: Adedeji Alerts Income Earners on January Pay

The Executive Chairman of the Nigeria Revenue Service, Dr. Zacch Adedeji, has urged lower-cadre income earners to pay close attention to their January salaries, saying the impact of the country’s new tax laws would be evident when compared with deductions under the former regime.

Speaking on TVC’s Journalists’ Hangout on Tuesday, Adedeji said the new tax framework was designed to reduce the tax burden on low-income earners, with the benefits expected to reflect in salaries paid at the end of January 2026.

He explained that the reforms were introduced to protect Nigerians’ disposable income, stressing that the laws were not aimed at increasing hardship. According to him, essential items such as food and transportation have been exempted from transactional taxes under the new regime.

Adedeji said salary earners in the lower cadre would be able to clearly confirm the difference once January salaries are paid, compared with what they previously paid under the old tax laws.

He also urged Nigerians to disregard rumours and misinformation surrounding the reforms, noting that many of the claims made about the new tax laws had already proven unfounded.
