Taraba Blind Association Appeals to Kefas for White Cane Day Support

The Taraba State chapter of the Nigeria Association of the Blind (NAB) has appealed to Governor Agbu Kefas for urgent support and active participation in the forthcoming 2025 International White Cane Day celebration.

In an open letter signed by the State Chairman, Wanderimam Teyang, the association urged the governor to approve funding for the two-day event and to personally attend, describing his presence as a vital show of inclusivity and solidarity with persons with disabilities.

The annual celebration, which honors the achievements and resilience of the blind and visually impaired, is scheduled to hold on October 15 and 16.

According to information obtained by DAILY POST, the event will begin with a symbolic road walk from the Ministry of Works to the Government House on the first day, followed by a grand celebration on the second.“We humbly plead with Your Excellency to remember our programme and to grace the occasion with your presence,” the letter read. “Your attendance will not only bring immense joy and encouragement to our members but also send a powerful message of inclusion and compassion for all persons with disabilities in the state.”

While commending Governor Kefas for his regular participation in state events, the group expressed concern that he had not yet attended any activity organized by the blind community.

The association, however, expressed optimism that his administration’s commitment to disability inclusion would be more visibly demonstrated this year.“As a disability-friendly governor, we are confident in your continued commitment to uplifting the lives of the blind and visually impaired,” the statement added.

The group further appealed for the prompt release of funds requested through a memo submitted by the Ministry of Social Justice and Reintegration to facilitate preparations for the celebration.

White Cane Day, observed globally on October 15, seeks to promote awareness about the independence, mobility, and rights of blind and visually impaired persons. The association expressed hope that Taraba State would play an active role in this year’s commemoration.
