According to a report by Al Jazeera on Thursdays, March 05, 2026, Turkiye has strongly condemned drone strikes targeting Azerbaijan’s Nakhchivan exclave, warning that attacks on third countries risk escalating the regional conflict.
In a statement, the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, “We emphasise once again the need to stop attacks targeting third countries in the region and carrying the risk of spreading the war.” The statement followed a call between Turkey’s top diplomat, Hakan Fidan, and his Azerbaijani counterpart, Jeyhun Bayramov.
Azerbaijan reported that two drones entered its Nakhchivan territory from Iran, with one striking an airport building. The attack prompted President Ilham Aliyev to vow retaliatory action. “We will take all necessary measures to defend our sovereignty,” Aliyev said, stressing that such attacks cannot go unanswered.
Iran’s armed forces have denied involvement in the incident, rejecting claims that the drones originated from Iranian territory. Officials in Tehran described the reports as “unfounded” and called for de-escalation.
The incident comes amid rising tensions in the region, where cross-border attacks have increasingly drawn in neighboring states. Analysts warn that strikes targeting territories beyond the immediate conflict zone could complicate diplomatic efforts and raise the risk of a wider confrontation.
Turkey, a close ally of Azerbaijan, has reiterated its commitment to regional stability and called for restraint from all parties. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasised the importance of avoiding actions that could escalate the conflict and affect neighboring countries.
The Nakhchivan exclave, separated from the main territory of Azerbaijan, has strategic significance due to its location along key borders. The attack highlights the fragility of security in the region and highlights ongoing concerns over the use of unmanned aerial systems in cross-border conflicts.See_More…
