Segun Sowunmi, a prominent chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party and convener of The Alternative, has cast doubt on the viability of former presidential candidate Peter Obi securing the ticket of the African Democratic Congress. During an interview on the Selah Medidate Podcast on Saturday, February 28, 2026, Sowunmi questioned Obi’s prospects, suggesting that he lacks the necessary financial muscle and understanding of the monetary dynamics that typically dictate party primary elections.
Sowunmi emphasized his extensive background in political strategy to validate his critique, noting that he has served as a spokesperson and director general for numerous campaigns, including those for former President Goodluck Jonathan. He argued that his experience proves he understands the mechanics of winning elections, unlike those he perceives as naive regarding the internal workings and financial requirements of political parties.
He criticized Obi’s political style as frivolous, claiming he is always looking for a “Frisbee” or an easy path where others simply step down for him. Sowunmi revealed that he had previously counseled Obi to cherish his achievements, specifically his ability to ignite hope in the youth and the Igbo nation, rather than risking that legacy by “kneeling down” and begging for tickets in unfamiliar political circles.
Sowunmi took issue with Obi’s conduct at public functions, expressing disdain for what he described as a demeanor lacking the necessary gravity for a potential president. He declared that he is not searching for a leader who acts like a “mascot,” but rather a man who understands the weight of power and appears commanding, arguing that Obi’s current approach undermines the seriousness required for the highest office in the land.
Addressing the broader issue of national representation, Sowunmi voiced his distress over the South-East’s continued exclusion from the presidency, questioning how many more years the region must wait. He asserted that the Igbo political elite, including himself, are driven to run for high office because of this exclusion, but he believes Peter Obi should have maintained a stronger, more dignified stance to advance this cause.
Concluding his remarks, Sowunmi dismissed the relevance of the other political platforms Obi might be engaging with, labeling them as “useless parties.” He advocated for a clear separation of political paths, stating that his camp would focus on its own campaign and mobilization efforts while Obi and his supporters pursue their own distinct agenda.See_More…
