Sowore begins mobilisation for #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest

Omoyele Sowore, the 2023 presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) and a well-known political activist, has launched what he described as a “nationwide mobilisation” for the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest.

Recall that Sowore had earlier announced 20 October as the date for a nationwide protest against the continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Kanu’s Prolonged Detention

Nnamdi Kanu has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since his arrest and repatriation from Kenya in 2021.

Despite several court rulings ordering his release, the Federal Government has continued to keep him in detention, citing security concerns.

Protest to Demand Kanu’s Release

Following his announcement, Sowore has begun mobilising protesters across the country. According to him, the demonstrators will converge in Abuja and march to the Presidential Villa (Aso Rock) to demand Kanu’s immediate release.

This latest move comes after several prominent Nigerians, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, publicly called for the Federal Government to obey court orders and release the IPOB leader.

Mobilisation Video Sparks Reactions

In a mobilisation video shared by Sowore, several supporters were seen, including Kanu’s legal counsels, Barristers Aloy Ejimakor and Maxwell Opara, among others.

The video has since stirred widespread reactions on social media, with Nigerians expressing mixed views about the planned protest. While some commended Sowore for standing up for justice, others warned that the demonstration could lead to unrest if not properly managed.

Don Chris said: “My brother just be careful because Nigeria can go extra mine to make sure this protest will not hold, be careful because they might come for u to arrest you to make sure they keep you in their custody till that date 20th pass.”

Chiukwujioke wrote: “It’s embarrassing that the igbo billionaires in Lagos has left their own for 4yrs in prison because they dnt want to offend their masters.”

Mazi Owoblow said: “Igbo political jobbers 2027 go dey interesting oooh I say make I tell una on be for social media Una go win election for obi na on ground Una go do am, all those things wey you dey tweet for here and you think say na fact come on ground talk am make the people hear you.”
