The Sokoto State Internal Revenue Service (SOIRS) has withdrawn its earlier directive mandating compulsory monthly electronic tax filing, clarifying that only annual tax returns are currently required to be filed electronically.
The clarification was issued in a public notice on Thursday, following public reactions to a January 5 circular that announced the introduction of mandatory monthly e-filing.
According to the agency, the decision to suspend the directive was due to the incomplete implementation of the required framework for monthly electronic filings. “The implementation framework for monthly e-filing is still in progress and has not yet been fully operationalised,” the notice said.
SOIRS advised taxpayers to disregard any references to compulsory monthly e-filing until further notice, while reaffirming that annual electronic filing remains mandatory in line with the Nigerian Tax Administration Act, 2025.
The agency noted that electronic filing remains central to its reform agenda, describing it as a tool for improving efficiency, transparency and ease of compliance in tax administration.
“Electronic filing remains a key component of modern tax administration aimed at promoting efficiency, transparency, accuracy and ease of compliance,” the notice stated.
SOIRS also pledged continued engagement with taxpayers, assuring them of support and guidance to ensure smooth compliance as reforms are gradually implemented.
The agency said it remains committed to strengthening tax administration and service delivery across the state.
