Sokoto govt breaks silence after US launched airstrike against terrorists

The Sokoto State government has officially reacted to the United States-led airstrikes carried out in collaboration with the Nigerian military against terrorist enclaves in the state.

The operation reportedly took place in Tangaza Local Government Area during a Christmas Day mission aimed at weakening ISIS-linked militants operating in northwestern Nigeria.

Government Confirms Joint Operation

The administration of Governor Ahmad Aliyu confirmed the development in a statement issued by the Director-General of Media and Publicity, Government House, Sokoto, Abubakar Bawa.

He explained that the attack was a joint effort between the Nigerian Armed Forces and US military authorities.

Airstrikes Target Terror Camps in Tangaza

According to the government, the mission specifically targeted terrorist hideouts in Tangaza.

It was described as part of ongoing security efforts to degrade terror and bandit networks disturbing Sokoto State and nearby border regions.

Officials, however, noted that full evaluation of the operation is still ongoing.

“The impact of the airstrike could not be immediately determined as assessment reports from the Joint Operations are still being awaited.”

No Civilian Casualties Recorded

Authorities reassured residents that no civilian casualties were recorded in either Tangaza or Jabo communities.

The government urged citizens to remain calm while security agencies continue surveillance.

Suspicious Objects Near Jabo Under Probe

The state government also addressed public concern over suspicious objects discovered near Jabo town in Tambuwal Local Government Area.

Investigations are ongoing with support from US and Nigerian military experts.

“The circumstances surrounding the objects found in a location near Jabo town could not be immediately explained, as the outcome of analysis by Nigeria–US military authorities is being awaited.”

Military Reacts, More Details Expected

Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters earlier confirmed that the Christmas Day strikes were carried out against ISIS-affiliated militants following cooperation between both countries’ security agencies.

Authorities say more details will be released when full assessment reports are ready.
