According to a report by the Punch on Thursday, March 26, 2026, the Edo State Government has reiterated that it does not play any role in the appointment of traditional rulers, maintaining that such decisions are solely handled by designated kingmakers within each community.
Speaking on the matter, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Kassim Afegbua, emphasised that the administration of Monday Okpebholo has consistently respected traditional institutions and allowed due process to guide the emergence of monarchs across the state.
He stated that “since Governor Okpebholo assumed office, he has neither interfered with traditional matters nor foisted anyone into the position of a king in any community in the state,” stressing that the government remains committed to preserving the autonomy of cultural and traditional systems.
Afegbua made the clarification while addressing concerns surrounding the selection of the Okuokpellagbe of Okpella, Michael Sado, whose emergence has been contested by some groups.
He explained that the process that produced the monarch followed established chieftaincy laws and was carried out transparently by recognised kingmakers, with observers present to ensure fairness. According to him, the outcome reflected the will of the majority involved in the selection process.
The commissioner further noted that legal challenges filed against the decision had already been dismissed, reinforcing the legitimacy of the current occupant of the stool.

He warned against attempts to revive settled disputes or politicise traditional matters, adding that the government’s non-involvement has contributed to stability in communities that previously experienced chieftaincy disagreements.
Afegbua urged all stakeholders to respect the established processes and support efforts aimed at maintaining peace and unity within the affected communities.
