Seyin Makinde raises salary of security guards from N18k to N80k after outcry

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has intervened in the plight of 67 security guards at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (Lautech) Hospital after they tearfully appealed to him during an event at the facility.

One of the guards, who was given a microphone, narrated their struggles, revealing that they had staged a protest as far back as June 2021 but had received no solution.

“On the 1st of June, 2021, we raised placards, asking you to help us. We’ve been here before Otunba Alao Akala and before the work of this place is completed. We are not staff but indigenes of Oyo State, please help us, we are suffering. I have a family and three children; my age is fast running out. Please help us, your excellency,” the security guard said, breaking down in tears.

Governor shocked by N18,800 salary

Governor Makinde asked the officer how much they earned, to which he responded, “N18,800.” A hospital representative then clarified that the security workers were not officially hospital staff but outsourced personnel, with the outsourcing firm being paid N27,000 per guard.

Reacting to the revelation, Governor Makinde announced a solution: “I can solve the problem right away by saying that all 67 should be converted directly to ad-hoc workers and you will get N80,000 every month from the first of October.”

The announcement was met with loud cheers and jubilation from the officers and the gathered crowd, as the governor’s decision more than quadrupled their earnings.
