Senator Akwashiki passes away in India at 52 on New Year’s Eve

The former senator representing Nasarawa North Senatorial District, Godiya Akwashiki, has passed away at the age of 52, marking a solemn moment in the state’s political history.

Family sources confirmed on Thursday that Akwashiki died on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, at a hospital in India, where he was receiving medical care.

Long illness and medical treatment

Sources disclosed that the lawmaker had battled a prolonged illness, which worsened after his re-election in 2023.

He reportedly received treatment in Nigeria, the United Kingdom and India, although the exact nature of his illness was not publicly disclosed.

Political career and legislative journey

Akwashiki was first elected into the Senate in 2019 and secured a second term in 2023 on the platform of the Social Democratic Party.

He became the only senator from Nasarawa North to win two consecutive terms since the state was created.

Before joining the National Assembly, he served several terms in the Nasarawa State House of Assembly.

He rose to become Majority Leader and later Deputy Speaker during his time in the state legislature.

Born on August 3, 1973, in Angba Iggah, Nassarawa Eggon Local Government Area, Akwashiki built a strong grassroots political base.

In the Senate, he focused on rural development, education, youth empowerment and infrastructure across Nasarawa North.

Political allies and community leaders described his death as a major loss to Nasarawa State and the country.
