A member of the Board of Trustees of the New Nigeria People’s Party, NNPP, Buba Galadima, has called on the Federal Government to stop shutting down schools because of rising insecurity, insisting that authorities should instead prioritise securing learning environments.
Speaking on Monday during an interview on Arise Television, monitored by NAIJAONPOINT, Galadima said government at all levels must find a better balance between protecting students and ensuring uninterrupted education.
“In the first place, it is shameful to close down the schools. It is shameful on the government, on those in the administration, and on all of us. You cannot close down schools; what you must do is protect them,” he said.
Galadima urged the government to move beyond traditional security measures and adopt modern technological tools capable of detecting threats before they occur. He also recommended the creation of specialised response teams to tackle emerging dangers swiftly.
His remarks come in the wake of renewed student abductions in parts of the country, which recently led the Federal Government to order the immediate closure of 41 unity schools.
In a statement issued by the Director of Senior Secondary Education, Hajiya Binta Abdulkadir, on behalf of the Minister, the closure was described as a precautionary step to avert potential security breaches. Principals of the affected schools were directed to comply immediately.
