Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State and Minister for Information and National Orientation Mohammed Idris are some of the dignitaries expected to attend an event in honour of Nigerian journalists aged 70 and above.
The event, marked “Appreciation Day” and organised by The Journalism Clinic, is scheduled to hold on Wednesday at the Nigerian Institute of Journalism, Ogba, Lagos.
The founder and Director of the Journalism Clinic, Mr Taiwo Obe, said in a press statement in Abuja that the event would appreciate the veterans for their lifelong contributions to the country’s media landscape.
“It’s simply to thank these elders – around 68 of them – for working, over the years, to inform, educate and entertain our people, with little regard for celebrating themselves.”
According to the statement, the Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission, Dr Aminu Maida, is also expected to deliver the keynote address at the event.
Maida’s late father, Wada Maida, was Editor-in-Chief and later Chairman of the Board of Directors of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
“We also invited some current media leaders and media scholars to the event, with the hope that they can learn a few lessons from the reflections of the elders,” Obe said.
The Centre for Research Information Management and Media Development (CRIMMD) Library and Museum is also expected to stage a mini-exhibition of the works of some of the media elders.
“It will be a day of nostalgia and thanksgiving,” Obe said. (NAN)
