The Rotary Club of Oluyole-Estate, Ibadan, has organised a career talk and quiz competition for students from five secondary schools in Ibadan as part of activities marking Rotary’s Basic Education and Literacy Month.
The programme, held at The Light Academy on Wednesday, brought together students from The Light Academy, TMM Model School, Christ Saviour School, Ibadan Boys High School and MashaAllah College.
The event was aimed at promoting literacy, encouraging academic excellence and exposing students to career opportunities and the importance of making informed educational choices.
Speaking at the programme, the President of the Rotary Club of Oluyole-Estate, Rotarian Kehinde Adeoye, described education as one of the most powerful tools for transforming lives and building stronger communities.
Welcoming participating students, teachers, judges and guests, Adeoye said literacy extends beyond the ability to read and write, noting that it also involves possessing the knowledge, confidence and understanding needed to navigate the world and seize opportunities.
She encouraged the students to remain curious, continue learning and develop their talents, stressing that their present circumstances should not limit their aspirations.
“Read. Learn. Grow. Achieve,” she said, urging the students to take their education seriously because the knowledge and skills they acquire today could open doors to future opportunities.
Adeoye also commended teachers and school administrators for their dedication to shaping young minds, noting that their influence goes beyond classroom instruction to building character, confidence and future leadership.

She urged participants to view the competition not merely as a contest for prizes but as an opportunity to celebrate learning, test their knowledge and challenge themselves.
The career talk was delivered by the club’s Director of Youth Services, Rotarian (Mrs) Mariam Fadeyi-Lawal, who encouraged students to cultivate a reading culture, understand their academic strengths and make career choices that could lead to self-reliance.
She advised them to identify their talents and pursue courses and skills that would equip them for future success and entrepreneurship.
During the quiz competition, participants were tested in Mathematics, English Language, Science and Current Affairs by a panel of judges comprising Rotarians Olaide Olayiwola, Akinloye Adeyeye and Omowunmi Adeyemo.
At the end of the contest, TMM Model School emerged overall winner, while MashaAllah College came second. Ibadan Boys High School placed third, The Light Academy finished fourth, while Christ Saviour School came fifth.
All participating schools received prizes and recognition for their efforts.
The Proprietress of The Light Academy, Pastor (Mrs) Stella Oloruntowoju, expressed appreciation to the Rotary Club of Oluyole-Estate for choosing the school to host the event.
She said the programme provided a valuable platform for students to showcase their knowledge, interact with their peers and gain exposure to career opportunities.
Also present at the event was the club’s Public Image Officer, Wuraola Badejogbin.
The programme formed part of the Rotary Club of Oluyole-Estate’s efforts to support basic education and literacy while encouraging young people to develop the knowledge and skills needed for a successful future.
