The community of Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal, is in mourning following the gruesome discovery of a 17-year-old girl, Nokwanda Zulu, who was reported missing earlier this week. Her body was found in a bushy area, naked and with multiple stab wounds, in what police have described as a brutal rape and murder.
According to reports, Nokwanda was last seen leaving her home on Tuesday evening, telling her twin sister that she was going to meet a friend. When she failed to return home, her worried family immediately reported her missing at the Newcastle Police Station. The family’s worst fears were confirmed days later when a passerby discovered her lifeless body lying in an open field near a gravel road.
KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed the tragic discovery. “The body of a 17-year-old girl was found with multiple stab wounds and signs of sexual assault. No arrests have been made at this stage, and investigations are ongoing,” he said.
The shocking crime has sent waves of anger and sadness through the Newcastle community, with residents demanding swift justice. Local women’s groups have condemned the murder, describing it as yet another horrific reminder of the gender-based violence (GBV) crisis in South Africa.
“She was just a child with dreams and a bright future,” said community leader and activist Zanele Mthembu. “Every day, our daughters disappear and are found dead. How many more Nokwandas must die before the system protects us?”
Family members describe Nokwanda as a quiet, respectful girl who loved school and shared an unbreakable bond with her twin sister. They did everything together,” said a family friend. Her sister is shattered. She hasn’t stopped crying since the police broke the news.
The police have appealed to anyone with information to come forward to help track down the suspect or suspected. Responsible for Nokwanda’s death.
