The legal community has been thrown into mourning and disbelief following the tragic killing of labour law attorney Chinette Gallichan, who was shot outside the offices of the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration in Johannesburg.
The 35-year-old lawyer from Krugersdorp lost her life in a brazen daytime attack on Monday morning near the intersection of Fox and Joubert Streets in the city’s central business district.
Early reports indicate that the incident took place around 09:00, just as Gallichan arrived at the CCMA offices for a scheduled case. Witnesses say she had parked her car and was stepping out when a man approached her.
According to eyewitness accounts, the attacker fired at close range before fleeing the scene, allegedly escaping in a waiting vehicle shortly afterward.
Paramedics rushed to the location, but despite their efforts, she was pronounced dead soon after due to the severity of her injuries.
At the time of the incident, Gallichan was working within the labour litigation division of mining company Sibanye Stillwater.
Sources close to the matter revealed that she had been representing the company in a labour dispute involving employees who were reportedly retrenched and seeking compensation.
Investigators suspect the attack may have been deliberate, noting that none of her belongings were taken, suggesting that robbery was not the motive.
Gallichan was highly regarded in the legal field for her expertise in labour law and her commitment to handling complex workplace disputes with professionalism.
She earned her LLB from the University of South Africa and later completed a postgraduate diploma in labour law at the University of Johannesburg, graduating with distinction.
Beyond her legal career, she was also active in athletics. Together with her husband, Keegan, she was part of the Run Zone Athletics Club in Northcliff, regularly competing in road races nationwide.
In 2023, she completed the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon with an impressive time of 4 hours, 18 minutes, and 57 seconds.
Colleagues and friends remember her as a dedicated professional and a warm, approachable individual within both the legal and sporting communities.
Her passing has sent shockwaves through those circles, with tributes continuing to pour in from people who knew her personally and professionally.
Police have opened a murder investigation and confirmed that efforts are ongoing to track down the suspect and uncover the motive behind the attack.
Authorities are appealing to the public to come forward with any information that could assist in bringing those responsible to justice.
