In a previous, emotional statement, Rihanna reflected on growing up in Barbados and recalled playing cricket as a child while looking up to Sobers’ achievements. She also shared her gratitude for having met him through Prime Minister Mia Mottley. “Sir Garry’s legacy will live on forever,” she said, adding that Barbados would love him “eternally.”
Sobers died 11 days before his 90th birthday, with his remarkable career making him one of Barbados’ most celebrated national figures.
Sir Garfield Sobers Is Considered Cricket’s Greatest All-Rounder
During his lifetime, Sir Garfield came to be recognized as the greatest all-rounder cricket has ever produced, thanks to a career that few players have come close to matching. The Barbadian icon represented the West Indies for two decades. In that period, he scored 8,032 Test runs and took 235 wickets.
At just 21, he set a then-world record with an unbeaten 365 against Pakistan. This mark would go on to stand for a remarkable 36 years. Sobers also became the first cricketer to hit six sixes in a single over during a first-class match in 1968.
His achievements earned praise from Australian great Sir Donald Bradman, who called him the greatest all-round cricketer he had ever seen. Sobers was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1975, and later became one of Barbados’ National Heroes.

In an official statement, Prime Minister Mia Mottley described Sobers as one of Barbados’ “greatest sons,” saying his journey from a humble upbringing to global sporting icon carried not only Barbados but the entire Caribbean onto the world stage. She ended her tribute with a simple message to the cricket legend: “For an innings that was so well played… We will always love you.”
