The price increases, which take effect on April 2, 2026, were “a necessary step to ensure we can continue delivering innovative, high-quality gaming experiences to players worldwide,” Isabelle Tomatis said.

Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Vice President of Global Marketing remarked in a PlayStation Blog.

“With continued pressures in the global economic landscape, we’ve made the decision to increase the prices of PS5, PS5 Pro, and PlayStation Portal remote player globally,” Tomatis tweeted.

“We know that price changes impact our community, and after careful evaluation, we found this was a necessary step to ensure we can continue delivering innovative, high-quality gaming experiences to players worldwide.”

Sony last increased the price of the PS5 in the United States in August of last year, when it announced $50 price increases for the PS5, PS5 Digital Edition, and PS5 Pro. The normal PS5 with a disc drive, as well as the PS5 Digital Edition, has been marked up by $100.

Meanwhile, the PS5 Pro has skyrocketed in price from $150 to $900. The PlayStation Portal has increased by $50. This means that a new PlayStation 5 will now start at $600. When the basic PS5 was released in November 2020, it was priced at at $500.

With the price increases not taking effect until April 2, customers have a tiny window to potentially save if they purchase a PS5 before then. Here are the finest offers available right now, so take advantage while you can.

  • PS5 Fortnite Bundle – $449 (save $200)
  • PS5 Digital Fortnite Bundle – $399 (save $200)
  • PS5 Pro – $749 (save $150)
  • PlayStation Portal – $199.99 (save $50)

The initial reaction to the price increases is a mix of anger and disappointment, but few are surprised given how things had been going. There is also growing concern that gaming will become – or may already be – prohibitively expensive for many individuals as of next month.

Circana analyst Mat Piscatella told Edge magazine (via PC Gamer) that gaming is increasingly becoming a high-income hobby.

“A bigger portion of the market is going to people who are more affluent, have higher incomes, and the lower-income parts of the market are really struggling,” according to Piscatella. “That premium gaming space is leaning more and more on the affluent consumer.”
