The Anambra police command has warned Nigerians not to raise money to help release Anulika Onyeanusia, a 36-year-old woman who was arrested for allegedly sexually abusing her seven-year-old daughter.
Tochukwu Ikenga, the command’s spokesperson, said the warning came after the police saw comments suggesting that some people were raising money to help release the suspect.
“We saw comments that some people are contributing money to look for a way to secure the release of the Nigerian mother who sexually abused her 7-year-old daughter and used her to create adult content. But we assure Nigerians that under our watch, we won’t allow it to happen,” he said.
Ikenga said the alleged fundraising is now part of the police investigation. He added that it could help identify others connected to the case.
“These comments also form part of our investigation; at least, it has shown that there are some persons behind what the woman is doing. From the revelation of the woman, you would observe it’s a syndicate crime and if need be, we will partner with our colleagues in the international community,” the police spokesperson added.
This development follows Onyeanusia’s arrest a few days ago in Onitsha. She is accused of assaulting her daughter and using sex toys to create sexual content.
The arrest happened after a disturbing livestream involving the child was shared online. This led to public outrage and calls for authorities to step in and protect the minor.
During the initial investigation, the suspect admitted she made money from the material. She reportedly received a maximum of $300.
She asked Nigerians to forgive her, while her husband said he did not know what had happened.
