The Police Command in Borno has recovered 52 stolen mobile phones in August as part of efforts to curb phone theft and handset snatching in Maiduguri metropolis.
The Command’s spokesperson, ASP Nahum Daso, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday in Maiduguri.
He said the Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Abdulmajid, held a strategic meeting with members of the Maiduguri GSM Market Committee to address rising cases of phone theft and the illegal sale of stolen handsets.
According to him, the meeting was necessitated by emerging security concerns and reports of increasing incidents of handset snatching within the metropolis.
Abdulmajid urged GSM dealers and other stakeholders in the telecommunications business to remain vigilant and ensure that their businesses were not used as channels for selling or disposing of stolen phones.
He also called on members of the GSM Village Committee to support the police by providing timely and useful information that could assist in identifying persons involved in phone theft and circulation of stolen handsets.
The Chairman of Maiduguri GSM Market Association, Mr Aliko Dass, assured the Command of the association’s commitment to intelligence sharing and cooperation in preventing the circulation of stolen phones.
The police urged members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities to the authorities.(NAN)
