Plateau Killings: Army Faults Viral Claim, Says Troops Never Shielded Attackers

By Chimezie Godfrey

‎The military has strongly refuted allegations that its personnel provided cover for attackers responsible for the Palm Sunday killings in Angwan Rukuba, Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State.

‎The denial followed a viral comment by a youth leader in the community accusing troops of complicity in the incident.

‎However, the Headquarters Joint Task Force, Operation Enduring Peace, described the allegation as “false, misleading and unfortunate.”

‎According to the military, troops swiftly mobilised to the scene after receiving a distress call but found that the attackers had already fled.

‎“At no point did troops provide any form of cover for the terrorist elements who carried out the attack,” the statement said.

‎It added that troops deployed four gun trucks to the area and acted professionally to prevent further bloodshed.

‎The military noted that eyewitnesses and other security agencies corroborated the response of the troops.

‎It warned that such allegations could demoralise personnel and create tension between the military and host communities.

‎The task force assured that efforts were ongoing to track and apprehend the perpetrators of the attack.

‎It urged residents to remain law-abiding and support security agencies with useful information.

‎“Troops will continue to deal decisively with criminals while maintaining peace across Plateau State,” the statement added.
