The 2027 presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, on Thursday held a high-level meeting with the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Dr Richard Montgomery, where both men discussed some of the most pressing issues facing Nigeria, including democracy, the economy and electoral reforms.
Obi disclosed details of the meeting in a post shared on his verified 𝕏 account, revealing that their conversation centred on strengthening Nigeria’s democratic institutions and ensuring future elections genuinely reflect the wishes of the electorate.
According to the former Anambra State governor, the meeting also touched on the country’s economic challenges and the urgent need to build stronger institutions capable of driving sustainable national development.
“We had a thoughtful discussion on the state of our democracy, the economy, the importance of strengthening our institutions, and the need to ensure that our elections remain free, fair, credible, and truly reflective of the will of the Nigerian people,” Obi wrote.
Beyond discussing national issues, Obi also used the opportunity to appreciate the British envoy, who is expected to conclude his diplomatic assignment in Nigeria next month.
The former Labour Party presidential candidate praised Montgomery for what he described as his constructive engagement with Nigeria throughout his tenure, noting that the diplomat played a significant role in strengthening relations between both countries.
According to Obi, Montgomery’s time in Nigeria was characterised by support for democratic governance and economic development.
“As Dr Richard Montgomery prepares to conclude his diplomatic assignment in Nigeria next month, I thanked him for his service and for the role he has played in strengthening the longstanding relationship between Nigeria and the United Kingdom,” Obi stated.

He added that the envoy’s tenure had been marked by meaningful engagement and consistent support for Nigeria’s democratic and economic aspirations.
Obi also wished the outgoing High Commissioner success in his next diplomatic assignment while expressing optimism that the relationship between Nigeria and the United Kingdom would continue to flourish.
“I wished him well as he prepares for his next assignment and thanked him for the friendship and cooperation he has extended to Nigeria throughout his tenure,” he said.
The former governor concluded his message with his familiar campaign slogan, saying:
“A New Nigeria is POssible.”
