“PDP Is In The DNA Of Many Nigerians,I Believe The Actual Opposition In Nigeria Is PDP–Maduabuchi

According to a report by Arise News on Monday, March 30, 2026, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Oba Maduabuchi, has raised concerns about the state of opposition politics in the country, stressing the need for a strong and active opposition to sustain democratic governance.

His remarks come at a time when internal disputes within major political parties have drawn attention to the broader challenges facing Nigeria’s political system.

Maduabuchi explained that a functional opposition plays an essential role in ensuring accountability and balance in governance.

According to him, when opposition parties are weakened or divided, the ability to provide effective checks on the ruling government is reduced.

He noted that democratic systems depend on active participation from multiple political actors, and the absence of a strong opposition could affect transparency and public trust in governance processes.

He specifically referred to the situation within the Peoples Democratic Party, describing it as a significant concern given the party’s role as one of the main opposition platforms in Nigeria.

He stated that ongoing internal disagreements and unresolved leadership issues have created uncertainty within the party.

This situation, he noted, has come at a time when preparations for future elections are expected to be gaining momentum.

Maduabuchi also drew attention to the role of the judiciary in addressing political disputes.

He called on the Supreme Court of Nigeria to handle pending cases related to opposition parties with urgency.

He explained that timely decisions are important to avoid disruptions in the political process, particularly as party primaries are expected to begin soon.

Delays in resolving such matters, he said, could have implications for the organisation and readiness of political parties.

He said, “Whatever anybody says, PDP is in the DNA of many Nigerians. I believe that the actual opposition party in Nigeria is the PDP. I strongly believe, and very tenuously too, that without opposition, the ruling party will ride roughshod over everybody. APC is taking a stroll in the park with a cup of coffee in one hand and deciding who holds what position and whatnot. So, I imagine that the Supreme Court should save Nigerian polity. It should save Nigerian polity. Decide this issue.”
