The Oyo State Police Command has announced a two-day programme to commemorate the 2026 International Youth Day, culminating in the launch of a National Campaign Against Political and Digital Thuggery aimed at curbing political violence and online abuse among young people.
The Command, in a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, Ayanlade Olayinka, said the activities are in line with the directive of the Inspector General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, and the United Nations theme for 2026, “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations.”
According to the statement, activities will commence on Friday, 21st August 2026, with a Police Walkathon involving officers and personnel of the Command.
The Walkathon is aimed at creating public awareness about International Youth Day and highlighting the importance of stronger Police–Youth partnerships in addressing security challenges and promoting peaceful communities.
The programme will culminate on Saturday, 22nd August 2026, at 10:00 a.m. prompt, at the Usman Alkali Baba Conference Hall, Oyo State Police Command Headquarters, Eleyele, Ibadan.
A major highlight of the event will be the launch of the National Campaign Against Political and Digital Thuggery.
He said that “the campaign seeks to sensitise young people against political violence and the misuse of digital platforms for incitement, harassment, cyberbullying, misinformation, disinformation and other harmful activities.
“This will be followed by a Police–Youth Dialogue designed to provide a platform for frank and constructive interaction between the Police and young people on issues relating to security, responsible digital citizenship, crime prevention, peaceful participation in democratic processes, and mutual trust.”
The Commissioner of Police, Oyo State Command, CP Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, called on youths, parents, traditional and community leaders, civil society organisations, and other stakeholders to support and participate in the activities.
Olugbenga noted that while young people may come from different backgrounds and face different realities, their shared aspirations for peace, security and a prosperous future provide a strong foundation for partnership with the Police and other stakeholders.
The Oyo State Police Command, however, reaffirms its commitment to meaningful engagement with young people.
He also urged the Nigerian youths to reject violence, political thuggery, digital abuse and other forms of criminality, while embracing their role as responsible citizens and positive agents of change.
