Oyo State Government, in partnership with a multinational company, on Monday commenced the distribution of 30,000 bags of rice to vulnerable residents across the state’s 33 local government areas as part of efforts to cushion the effects of the prevailing economic hardship.
The intervention, which complements the state’s Sustainable Action for Economic Recovery (SAfER) initiative, is targeted at persons with disabilities and other vulnerable groups to mitigate the effects of inflation and rising food prices.
Speaking at the flag-off ceremony held at the State Local Government Building, Secretariat, Ibadan, Governor Seyi Makinde, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Musibau Babatunde, commended the donor company for partnering with the state government to support vulnerable residents.

He said the initiative underscores the administration’s determination to protect the most vulnerable members of society from the harsh economic realities.
“Our administration remains committed to implementing policies and programmes that will cushion the effects of inflation, hunger and economic hardship on our people. We appreciate our development partners for joining hands with us to improve the welfare of vulnerable residents across Oyo State,” he said.
Makinde added that his government would continue to explore strategic partnerships with the private sector and development organisations to expand social intervention programmes and ensure that no vulnerable group is left behind.
“We will continue to work with credible partners to provide relief and improve the quality of life of our people. Together, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of those who need support the most,” he added.
Also speaking, the Head of Operations of the partnering multinational company, Mr. Victor Ejiro, said the donation formed part of the company’s annual corporate social responsibility initiative aimed at supporting one million vulnerable Nigerians nationwide.
He said the company recognised the economic challenges confronting many households and considered it necessary to support government efforts in addressing hunger.
“This donation is part of our annual empowerment programme designed to reach one million vulnerable Nigerians across the country. We recognise the economic realities facing many families, and we are committed to supporting initiatives that improve the well-being of vulnerable communities,” Ejiro said.
He commended the Oyo State Government for its commitment to social welfare and for providing a transparent platform to ensure that the food items reach the intended beneficiaries.
“We are pleased to partner with the Oyo State Government because of its demonstrated commitment to accountability and the welfare of its citizens. We are confident that these food items will get to those who truly need them,” he added.
Some beneficiaries, drawn from the 33 local government areas of the state, expressed appreciation to the state government and the donor company, describing the intervention as timely.
One of the beneficiaries said, “This support has come at the right time. The rice will help reduce the burden on my family, and we are grateful to the government and the company for remembering people like us during these difficult times.”
The event featured the symbolic presentation of bags of rice to selected beneficiaries and was attended by top government officials, political appointees and other stakeholders.
