Oyo Catholic Bishop Emeritus Julius Adelakun passes away at 91

The Catholic Diocese of Oyo has announced the passing of its Bishop Emeritus, Most Rev. Julius Babatunde Adelakun, who died on Friday at the age of 91.

His death was confirmed in a statement issued by the current Bishop of Oyo, Most Rev. Emmanuel Badejo, on Saturday.

Adelakun, who devoted over three decades to shepherding the Oyo Diocese, was described as a man whose ministry deeply influenced generations of priests and lay faithful.

According to Bishop Badejo, his predecessor lived “a full, fruitful life, touching countless souls through faith and service.”

Born on 4 November 1934, Bishop Adelakun was ordained a Catholic priest in 1965 and later consecrated as bishop in 1973, beginning a pastoral journey that would define Catholic leadership in the South-West for decades.

A legacy of service and spiritual dedication

During his 36-year episcopacy, which spanned from April 13, 1973, to November 4, 2009, Bishop Adelakun became a pillar of strength and vision for the Catholic community in Oyo.

His leadership saw the establishment of parishes, schools, and faith-based initiatives that continue to impact lives.

Colleagues and followers have described him as a humble servant of God who combined discipline with compassion in guiding the flock entrusted to his care.

His work extended beyond the church, contributing to social and moral development across communities.

Bishop Badejo urged all members of the Oyo Diocese to keep the late bishop in their prayers, noting that funeral details would be announced later. “He built foundations of faith that still stand strong today,” he said.

Tributes pour in from the Catholic community

Messages of condolence have continued to flood in from clergy, parishioners, and Catholic faithful across Nigeria.

Many recalled his dedication to spreading the gospel and his calm, fatherly approach to leadership.

The late bishop’s life of commitment and selfless service has been described as a testimony to faith and perseverance. His contributions to Catholic education and evangelisation remain visible across Oyo State and beyond.

As the Diocese prepares for his final farewell, Bishop Adelakun is remembered not only as a religious leader but also as a moral compass whose life inspired both the old and the young.
