Our Issue Is Not Really With The Guidelines But With The Electoral Act — IPAC Nat’l Chair, Dantalle

National Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), Yusuf Dantalle, has stated that political parties are largely in agreement with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on the recently released timetable for the 2027 general elections.

Dantalle made this known during an interview on Arise Television on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, while addressing discussions between IPAC and INEC regarding electoral preparations.

He explained that the engagement with INEC was prompted by the need to ensure that the electoral timetable reflects current legal realities. According to him, “Thank you once again. Yesterday, we had an engagement with INEC over the release of the timetable and the reason is simple. There is a new electoral act and then you cannot use the previous guideline which meant for the 2022 electoral act for 2027 general elections.”

Dantalle emphasised the importance of aligning electoral processes with updated legislation. He stated, “So, it must align with the reality of the moment which is what INEC did.”

He further noted that the meeting provided an opportunity for stakeholders to review the timetable collectively and suggest adjustments where necessary. He said, “And in the course of that engagement, we were able to look at it collectively and then point out to a few things that we need, maybe adjustment, which we agreed.”

According to him, the discussions resulted in a broad consensus between political parties and the electoral body. He added, “So, to a greater extent, we’re on the same page with INEC on the issue of the release of timetable.”

However, Dantalle clarified that concerns remain regarding specific provisions within the Electoral Act itself. He stated, “Our issue is not really with the guidelines but with the electoral act.”

He further explained that certain clauses within the law are viewed as problematic by political stakeholders. According to him, “Some of the clauses in the electoral act that we feel that is inimical to democratic practice in Nigeria. And we have tabled that.”
