Osun INEC Cautions Parties Ahead of Primaries

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Osun State has called on all registered political parties to strictly adhere to the Electoral Act, 2022, and the Commission’s regulations as preparations for the 2026 party primaries intensify.

In a statement issued on Monday by the Commission’s Public Affairs Officer, Olurode Musa, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Dr. Mutiu Agboke, urged parties to comply with established procedures to ensure credible and lawful primaries.

“We urge all political parties to ensure that their primaries are conducted in a transparent, democratic, and peaceful manner,” INEC stated.

The Commission expressed concern that party primaries had become a major source of pre-election litigation, noting that many disputes could be avoided if parties adhered to legal guidelines.

According to the statement, “Primary elections have often been a source of pre-election litigations which can be avoided if parties follow the laid-down procedures and guidelines.”

INEC reminded stakeholders that its national timetable schedules party primaries between November 24 and December 15, 2025, stressing that all parties must operate strictly within the approved period.

The Commission assured that it is prepared to support political parties throughout the process.
“The Commission is prepared to provide necessary support and guidance to parties to ensure that their primaries are conducted in accordance with the law,” it added.

INEC also appealed to security agencies and other stakeholders to collaborate with it in ensuring peaceful intra-party contests and maintaining order throughout the primaries.

The Commission warned that it would closely monitor party activities and take lawful action against any party that violates the rules.

It reiterated the importance of internal party democracy as a foundation for credible elections and political stability, reaffirming its commitment to protecting the integrity of the electoral process.
