Osimhen: Super Eagles will make amends at AFCON

Super Eagles forward Victor Osimhen has expressed his regret to Nigerians following the national team’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

‎ The Galatasaray striker admitted that missing out on football’s biggest tournament was a huge disappointment for fans across the country.

‎ He spoke ahead of Nigeria’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) match against Tanzania, set to take place in Fès on Tuesday.

‎Osimhen acknowledged the high expectations placed on the team and described the upcoming AFCON as a chance to correct past mistakes.

‎“The expectations are very high, and this AFCON gives us the opportunity to make things right,” he told Pooja Media. “We want to restore belief among Super Eagles fans around the world and show that we still have much more to offer. We are truly sorry.”

‎He added that the players are fully aware of the pain felt by Nigerians after failing to secure a World Cup spot.

‎“We know how disappointed the fans are. Missing out on the World Cup hurts, and we take responsibility. Now, we must move forward and give our best,” Osimhen said.

‎Nigeria’s World Cup hopes ended after a defeat to DR Congo in the playoff final a few weeks ago.

‎Despite the team’s overall failure to qualify, Osimhen was one of Nigeria’s standout performers during the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

‎He scored six goals and provided one assist, making a significant impact whenever he featured. His highlights included a brace against Rwanda and a sensational hat-trick against Benin Republic, while also contributing another goal and an assist in other matches.
