Oshoala Challenges CAF Over Concentration of Major Tournaments in Morocco

By AbdulRahman AbdulRahman

Six-time African Women’s Player of the Year, Asisat Oshoala, has questioned the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) continued allocation of major tournaments and awards to Morocco, raising concerns over what she described as an apparent imbalance in hosting opportunities across the continent.

The Super Falcons forward voiced her concerns on social media, highlighting Morocco’s role as host of several high-profile CAF and FIFA events in recent years. These include the 2025 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations, multiple CAF Awards ceremonies, the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, and the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.

Oshoala suggested that the repeated hosting rights granted to Morocco may amount to overcompensation, arguing that the trend has become excessive. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), she wrote:

“The big question here is when will this whole @CAF_Online compensation to Morocco end. Awards, tournaments and all… it’s getting boring now. We need other countries to step up. Everything concerning African football happens in Morocco — feels like that’s the new HQ.”
Her remarks have reignited discussions within African football circles about the growing concentration of major CAF events in a single country and the need for broader inclusivity in hosting rights.

Morocco’s rising influence in African football was recently underlined by notable achievements, including Atlas Lions captain Achraf Hakimi being named the 2025 African Player of the Year, as well as Morocco’s qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after a 4–2 penalty shootout victory over Nigeria.

As of the time of filing this report, CAF has not issued an official response to Oshoala’s comments.
