A Nigerian man has sparked heated debate online after criticising landlords in Asaba for allegedly fixing rent beyond the reach of average workers while rejecting so-called “Yahoo boys” as tenants.
In a viral video, the man questioned how civil servants earning between N200,000 and N300,000 monthly could possibly afford a two-bedroom flat priced at N2.5m to N3m per year.
He described the landlords’ stance as “madness,” arguing that such houses were clearly built with only internet fraudsters and the wealthy in mind.
According to him, the hypocrisy of rejecting suspected fraudsters while charging impossible rents exposes the true intentions of landlords.
He warned that the housing crisis in major cities would only worsen unless honesty prevailed in pricing.
‘Civil Servants Can’t Afford This’
The man further compared the exorbitant rent to Nigeria’s current minimum wage, noting that most citizens live hand-to-mouth and cannot set aside millions for annual rent. He insisted that landlords should stop pretending about the target audience for such properties.
“Let’s be very honest, you know the people you want to rent it to,” he said, adding that the struggling middle class and low-income earners had long been priced out of decent accommodation.
He suggested that landlords openly admit their houses were intended for only the wealthy and not create a façade of morality by rejecting young men who could actually afford it.
Social media reactions
The comments drew widespread attention online, with many Nigerians weighing in:
ojigomba: “Some landlord and agent are thieves.”
JCyankeee: “Nah for politicians not for you.”
bobekatt: “The system encourages theft. No civil servant from Level 10 below can afford decent flats in cities in Nigeria.”
LORD_EP: “I don’t blame the landlord, the cost of building an apartment is high.”
societyloves: “If them never kyai one of those landlords, e no go come correct.”
