One Dead, Several Injured in Ilorin Highway Crash

One person was killed and several others injured after a commercial bus carrying 21 passengers crashed and caught fire along the Oko-Olowo highway in Ilorin, Kwara State, on Sunday.

The accident occurred at about 6:35 p.m. near Iye-Maja Junction after a tyre reportedly burst, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle. The bus, with registration number DTH840SA, subsequently somersaulted before catching fire.

Hassan Adekunle, spokesman for the Kwara State Fire Service, said firefighters responded promptly to the scene and began rescue operations.

According to him, the passengers were evacuated from the vehicle, while those injured were taken to a hospital for medical treatment. One passenger was confirmed dead.

The Chief Fire Officer, Alabi Muhammed, expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and wished the injured passengers a speedy recovery.

Muhammed urged motorists, particularly commercial vehicle operators, to ensure their vehicles are properly maintained and roadworthy before embarking on journeys.

He also advised drivers to regularly inspect tyres, braking systems, electrical components and other critical vehicle parts, noting that early detection of faults could help prevent serious accidents.

The fire service further urged motorists to exercise caution on highways and promptly report emergencies to relevant response agencies.
