Former Osun State deputy governor and APC chieftain, Senator Iyiola Omisore, has officially announced his intention to contest the 2026 governorship election.
Omisore revealed his decision in a statement shared on his X handle on Saturday, where he described the move as the outcome of “deep reflection and wide consultations.” His formal declaration will be held on Tuesday, October 7, at the All Progressives Congress (APC) Secretariat in Osogbo.
According to him, the campaign will run under the theme, “Fix the Broken, Restore Our Dreams,” with the event scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
Focus on restoring hope and governance
The former senator noted that his mission was to restore hope, strengthen governance, and deliver a brighter future for the people of Osun.
“This is not just my mission, it is a collective one. I humbly invite you to join me as we take this bold step towards the Osun Rescue Mission 2026,” he said in his post.
A long political journey
Omisore’s declaration marks yet another step in his long political career. He served as Osun’s deputy governor between 1999 and 2003 under the Alliance for Democracy before representing Osun East in the Senate from 2003 to 2011, where he chaired the Appropriations Committee.
He contested the 2014 governorship election on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party but lost to then-incumbent governor Rauf Aregbesola.
After later joining the Social Democratic Party for the 2018 election, Omisore eventually moved to the APC in 2021, where he quickly rose to the position of National Secretary after his main opponent stepped down.
With this declaration, Omisore is expected to emerge as one of the leading aspirants for the APC governorship ticket in Osun ahead of the 2026 polls.
