Prof Jonah Onuoha, says Mr Peter Obi, the Presidential candidate of Labour Party in 2023 general elections defection to African Democratic Party (ADC) may not change the narrative in 2027 general elections.
Our correspondent recalled that, Obi had on December 31, 2025 in Enugu formally dumped LP and joined ADC, the political collations that wants to ensure that President Bola Tinubu did not return for second tenure during 2027 general elections.
Onuoha a Lecturer at the Department of Political Science, University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) said this in Nsukka on Friday in an interview with our correspondent while reacting to Obi’s defection to ADC on Wednesday..
He said that 2023 election victories by LP was as result of Obi’s influence especially in South East where LP won many national and state assembly election seats but predicted that it may not happen again in 2027.
The Political Scientist explained that the obident movement and spirit that did that suprise in 2023 elections had died and it would be difficult to revive.
“I don’t see Obi defection to ADC changing the narrative in terms of elections victories in South East and the country in general 2027.
“The obident movement and spirit that did that wonder in 2023 general elections have died and will be difficult to resurrect from now to the time of general elections.
“In 2023, Nigerians followed Obi with all their might and strength hoping that Obi will be the president of the country to revive the economy but when their hopes were dashed, they become demoralised and disappointed,*he said.
According to him it was because the spirit of obident movement had collapsed and disappeared that made Obi to dump LP for ADC.
The former Head of Department of Political Science in UNN said the 2027 presidential elections would be a fight between the ruling party All Progressive Congress (APC) and ADC.
“It will be a tough electoral fight in 2027 between APC and ADC but the party with better candidate will win.
“APC currently has many governors in the country, so ADC must go extra miles to win the presidential election in 2027,”he said.
Onuoha who is also the Director, Centre for American Studies in UNN urged politicians to always consider national interest and unity of the country in all they do as well as avoid actions and utterances that would over-heat the polity.
