Obi Will Go Into A Function Kneeling Down, You Think I’m Looking For President Like A Mascot—Sowunmi

A chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party and convener of The Alternative, Segun Sowunmi, has questioned the prospects of former presidential candidate Peter Obi securing the ticket of the African Democratic Congress ahead of future elections. Sowunmi made the remarks during an interview on the Selah Medidate Podcast on Saturday, February 28, 2026.

The comments came in response to a question posed during the interview on whether Peter Obi could successfully clinch the ADC ticket. Responding directly, Sowunmi said, “Let him go and clench it now. Somebody that cannot give shishi.” He went on to describe what he characterized as the internal realities of party primaries, stating, “You went to go and join the mist of people that every ticket is you know the money they used to do primaries. You are naive.”

Sowunmi referenced his past involvement in political campaigns to support his remarks. “I was spokesperson of a campaign. I know these things. I was former director general of campaign for Jonathan. I won when others lost. I was former DG of a campaign in many times over,” he said.

Continuing, he commented on Obi’s political approach and decision-making. “Peter is always looking for Frisbee. When others will say they are not contesting, they will step down for him,” Sowunmi stated. He added that he had previously advised Obi on his political path. “And I’ve always told him, listen, don’t worry yourself. You have already done the major thing. You have ignited hope in young people. You have ignited hope in the Igbo nation.”

Sowunmi questioned what he described as Obi’s continued pursuit of electoral platforms, saying, “Why do you want to throw it away on the altar of all this kneeling down for them?” He further criticised Obi’s public conduct at political gatherings. “Peter will go into a function. He be kneeling down like what?” he said.

Expanding on his expectations of political leadership, Sowunmi stated, “You think I’m looking for a president that be going around like a mascot. I want him to appear in the place like a man who understand that power must change hand.” He also made reference to broader political representation, particularly concerning the South-East. “If not that the Igbo have not done you think I’ll be trying to be governor. I’ll be running for president,” he said.

He continued by expressing concern about the absence of an Igbo president. “But I feel that how can the Igbo not have produced president and it will always be us all the time. How many more years can we wait when Peter supposed to stand,” Sowunmi said.

Concluding his remarks, he dismissed engagement with other political platforms, stating, “Just please let them do whatever they want to do in their useless party. This is where we are. Let them campaign their camp. We campaign our campaign. Let them mobilize.”See_More…
