Obi denies political alliance with Jonathan ahead of 2027 election

Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, has refuted claims that he is forming an alliance with former President Goodluck Jonathan ahead of the 2027 polls.

Speculations had intensified following a closed-door meeting between the two politicians in Abuja, sparking talk of a united opposition plan to unseat President Bola Tinubu.

However, Obi’s media aide, Dr Yunusa Tanko, clarified that the meeting was purely informal and centred on national development, not political manoeuvring.

‘It was just a friendly visit’

Dr Tanko, who also serves as the National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement Worldwide, described the encounter as a simple exchange between two leaders with mutual respect and shared concern for Nigeria.

He stated, “They have a long-standing relationship. Seeing them talk should not be blown out of proportion. It was a friendly discussion, not a political pact.”

Tanko added that even when the duo met earlier in Ghana, no political talks were held, reaffirming that there was no secret deal or agreement regarding 2027.

Opposition tension over 2027 strategy

The clarification comes amid rising tension within opposition ranks as talks of possible coalitions dominate political discussions.

Supporters of both leaders have taken to social media, debating who should lead a unified opposition bloc in the next election.

Meanwhile, Obi has continued nationwide consultations, which many analysts believe could shape the political landscape as he builds momentum for 2027.
