A Nigerian employer has sparked online debate after revealing a strict rule for her domestic staff: they cannot send money home from the day they are hired.
In a viral video shared on her Instagram page, the employer, identified as Chinelo Okeke, explained that the policy is meant to help staff adjust to their roles and manage their finances better.
While she understands that many domestic workers come from families that rely on their earnings, in her household, the money belongs to the staff, not their relatives.
In her own words, she told staff:
“If it doesn’t sit right with you, my house is not the right place for you. The rule is you are not allowed to send money back home.”
Chinelo added that staff have the choice to use their money as they wish or let her save it for them, which she says helps their savings grow the longer they work.
The policy has divided opinions online. One commentator wrote, “It’s reasonable. Staff should learn to spend their money first for themselves.” Another said, “How can someone stop sending money home? That’s harsh!”
Chinelo also stated that any parent expecting their child to send money home is not a good parent, noting that she does sends money to her own parents if she wishes.
For this employer, it’s clear: staff must either adapt or find a different job.
