The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has urged the Senate to come clean on the amendment of the 2022 Electoral Act, particularly on provisions relating to electronic transmission of election results.
In a statement signed by its President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, the labour centre expressed concern over conflicting reports on whether INEC was mandated to transmit results in real time.
The NLC said public records suggest that the Senate retained discretionary powers for INEC rather than adopting mandatory electronic transmission.
It warned that the ambiguity could undermine public confidence in the electoral process.
“The Nigerian people deserve a transparent electoral system where votes are not only counted but seen to be counted,” the statement said.
The organisation called on the National Assembly leadership to ensure clarity during the harmonisation of the bill.
It also warned that failure to guarantee electronic transmission could trigger protests or election boycotts.
The NLC said it would continue to mobilise its members and stakeholders in defence of electoral integrity.
